Prof. Susan Nicolson is Head of the Department of Zoology and Entomology at the University of Pretoria. Her research interests are in physiological aspects of pollination biology: nectar secretion patterns, the composition of nectar and pollen, and the nutritional, energetic and osmoregulatory implications for birds and bees of consuming these foods. Research carried out by her group on sunbirds and their nectar diets has provided an African perspective on bird-flower relationships. Prof Nicolson has published 130 journal articles and two books, Insect Physiological Ecology: Mechanisms and Patterns, co-authored with S. Chown (Oxford, 2004) and Nectaries and Nectar, co-edited with M. Nepi and E. Pacini (Springer, 2007). Her current research is concentrated on honeybee nutritional physiology and the effects of toxic nectar. Tel: 012 420 3233 Fax: 012 362 5242 E-mail: [email protected] |
