Martin Coetzee is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Genetics and researcher in the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute (FABI) at the University of Pretoria.
Dr Coetzee received his PhD in 2004 from the University of Pretoria. This was followed by a period of postdoctoral study (2004-2006) and a research fellowship (2007-2009) at the same university before becoming a Senior Lecturer in 2010.
His research focuses on the molecular evolution and biological systematics of tree pathogenic fungi.
Dr Coetzee has an NRF Y2 rating.
Martin Coetzee is a research leader in the Tree Protection Co-operative Programme (TPCP) and DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in Tree Health Biotechnology (CTHB) at FABI where he is co-leading several projects related to genomics and evolution of fungal tree pathogens, with a specific focus on fungi in the genera Armillaria and Fusarium. Research projects include an investigation of microsatellite evolution and diversity in fungal genomes, the characteristics of gene silencing mechanisms in fungi and genome evolution of the plant pathogenic root-rot fungus Armillaria fuscipes.
