Fourie Joubert was educated at the University of Pretoria, where he completed a PhD in Biochemistry in 2000.
He co-founded the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Unit in 2003. He was promoted to Professor at the beginning of 2012. He is currently the Director of the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Unit, which has 5 staff members and around 18 post-graduate students.
He has an NRF C2-rating, and has published over 30 research papers and book chapters. He is a founding member of the South African Society for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology.

Fourie Joubert collaborates with Lizette Jansen van Rensburg on the exome sequencing of breast cancer using two approaches: The first approach to discover high penetrance variants in familial breast cancer, and the second to investigate variations between normal and tumour genomes within the same patient.
