Prof. JN (Kobus) Eloff is the founder of the interdisciplinary Phytomedicine Programme, Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria

He was or is currently serving as editor or is on the editorial board of the following journals: SA Journal of Botany, SA Tydskrif vir Natuurwetenskap en Tegnologie, International Journal for Phytomedicine, BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine.  He has reviewed manuscripts for 280 different scientific journals. 

He has presented 217 international presentations. He has published 290 scientific publications. (9962 citations, h factor = 45 with 145 publications cited at least 10 times).

A B-category (internationally recognised researcher) rating was received from the NRF.

He has received the following awards: International Horticultural Society Bronze medal, SA Association of Botanists Silver and Gold medal and honorary Life Membership, SA Akademie vir Wetenskap en Kuns Havenga medal, Gold medal and MT Steyn Prize, National Science and Technology Forum Eskom Prize for capacity development and Academy for Science of South Africa (ASSAf) Gold medal.  His personal profile is included in a book published by ASSAf entitled “Legends of South African Science” with 52 other scientists from natural and social sciences

 

Research Expertise/Interest


  • Using plants selected by focused screening and ethnoveterinary knowledge, to treat infections/ infestations by microorganisms and parasites on production animals.
  • Several patents registered and products licensed to industrial companies based on the Phytomedicine group’s research.
  • Managed a project that led to the African Herbal Pharmacopoeia.

 

Postgraduate Students


PhD

  • Dr E Pauw: Completed her PhD in 2014 in the field of “The taxonomic relationships between 537 southern African tree species and their antimicrobial activity against six important bacterial and fungal pathogens”
  • Mr NKK Boaduo: Completed his PhD in 2015 in the field of “Evaluation of the mechanism of activity of extracts of Pterocarya franxinifolla (Juglandaceae) trees used to replace antibiotic growth promoters in pig production in Europe
  • Ms NC Netnou-Nkoana: Completed her PhD in 2017 in the field of “Aspects of intellectual property protection in relation to seed crops, floriculture and medicinal plants that may impact on policy and legislative development in South Africa
  • Mr DSS Shuping: Completed his PhD in 2017 in the field of “Development of an antifungal product from Melianthus comosus (Melianthaceae) that can be used to control plant fungal pathogens

 

MSc

  • Ms MM Mogashoa: Completed her MSc in 2017 in the field of “Isolation and characterisation of antifungal and antibacterial compounds from Combretum molle (Combretaceae) leaf extracts”
