Dr Surette Van Staden, Acting Director of the Centre for Evaluation and Assessment (CEA) conducted a two-day fieldwork training on the 7th and 8th March 2013 at the CEA. The training was intended to prepare the fieldworkers for a quantitative data collection in 3 provinces, Western Cape, Free State and Limpopo province for the School Monitoring Survey (SMS).
The survey was commissioned by the Department of basic Education Department of Basic at ordinary public schools to monitor progress towards the achievement of the goals set out in the Action Plan 2019. The CEA partnered with SAB&T in this round of data collection, which follows a qualitative data collection conducted in 2017, and aims to conduct classroom observations and interviews with a range of stakeholders, including school principals, mathematics and language teachers as well as members of the School Governing Body (SGB).
The fieldwork logistics for this project at the CEA were handled by Mr Mishack Tshele. Data collectors included professionals and experts in the field of school monitoring. The survey covers five action plan indicators, which includes professional development and training, school governance, school management information, District monitoring, as well as Assessment, perception and knowledge.
