The School of Public Administration and Management (SPMA) held its 11th International Conference at the Diep in die Berg Conference & Function Centre in October 2018. As this year’s conference coincided with the SPMA’s 25th anniversary celebrations, the theme of the conference was ‘Twenty-five years: Reflecting on the past, influencing the future of public administration and management’.
A total of 42 high-quality research papers were presented by several international scholars at this year’s annual conference. The papers stimulated debate on public administration relevance, and readiness to deal with contemporary challenges in a global environment. Academics, researchers and practitioners used the conference for robust discussions on topical issues confronting public administration and management in the 21st century.
One conclusion drawn at the conference was that the immediate challenge for academia is to conceptualise the skills and competencies public officials should possess in order for the public service to remain relevant in view of political uncertainty, globalisation and technological advancements. The fourth industrial revolution creates the need to capacitate public officials to handle current and future administrative challenges of the digital era.
