Prof Chaya Herman, an NRF rated researcher and staff member of the Department Education Management and Policy Studies whose main research interests are education policy, international doctoral students and doctoral studies in general, recently presented a seminar entitled ‘Doctoral Education in South Africa: Past, Present and Future’ at the University of Johannesburg’s Faculty of Education.
Doctoral education has a long and complex history in South Africa, from the time the first doctorate was awarded in 1899 to current times. This presentation looked to explore the past, present and future of doctoral education in South Africa, by identifying the different institutional profiles and emphases of doctoral graduation in
South African universities at various periods of time. It furthers analysed the progress that has been made in attaining the national goals of equity, redress and increased research as well as the current challenges and measures that have been put in place to increase the production of PhDs in the country.
The presentation, attended by both academic staff and post-graduate students, was very well received, and Prof Herman was thanked for her contribution to both the body of knowledge in this field, and to the students of both UP and UJ.
