The announcement of the 2015 Nobel Prize Laureate in Economic Sciences today (12 October) will be celebrated in the Musaion on the UP campus with the hosting of the annual Nobel Lecture Series by the National Research Foundation (NRF) and the Swedish Embassy.
This year’s lecture will be preceded by a screening of the announcement of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences followed by a presentation by Mr Olof Somell (curator of the Nobel Museum in Stockholm and specialist in economics), which will provide an overview of the history and context of the Nobel Prize.
A prominent South African researcher, Unisa SBL Executive Director and CEO Dr Renosi Mokate, will give a lecture on the link between core research and real-life application, tying together science, innovation and economic development.
The event will showcase research excellence and emphasise the importance of research, technology and innovation in addressing real challenges that are confronting communities.
The lecture is open to all researchers and students (undergraduates and postgraduates) in the Nobel fields.
The Swedish-South Africa Nobel Inspired Lecture Series was launched in 2014 and annually brings together prominent researchers in the fields of economic sciences, medicine/physiology, physics, chemistry, peace and literature for an event coinciding with the announcement of the Nobel Laureates. The aim of the event is to acknowledge research excellence in South Africa and Sweden and to celebrate the long-standing friendship between the two countries.
The proceedings will start at 12:00.
