Commercii, the Economic and Management Sciences (EMS) Faculty House, has announced that it will for the first time host a faculty festival for its students. Set to take place from 11 to 13 April 2019, the festival will go by the name of ‘2moroLand’.
Ms Zonke Makaula, Commercii Chairperson, says that the inaugural festival will focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “The slogan for the festival is ‘Advancing Tomorrow Today’. We hope that the name 2moroLand will inspire EMS students to realise that, regardless of their degree, they can play a role in ensuring a better tomorrow for themselves and the upcoming generations, which is ultimately the goal of all 17 SDGs,” she explains.
Some of the exciting activities planned for the first day of the festival include a conference focused on the SDGs, a talent show and a quiz night. On the second day, attendees can look forward to a career advancement session and a showcase where students with entrepreneurial initiatives will be able to promote their businesses, as well as a mentorship challenge. The festival will come to a close with a gala dinner for the students and staff. There will also be an award ceremony, during which Commercii will award the Faculty’s lecturers in various categories.
Commercii is under the guardianship of the Albert Luthuli Centre for Responsible Leadership (ALCRL). Prof Derick de Jongh, Director of the ALCRL, says that the 2moroLand festival presents an opportunity for EMS students to showcase their individuality, creativity and enjoy themselves on campus. But most importantly, he states: “Through this event, Commercii wants to emphasise that every EMS student is already part of the next generation of responsible leaders. 2moroLand offers great opportunities to further students’ leadership skills. Another important objective of 2moroLand is to bridge the gap between staff and students. This will be an exciting opportunity to build relations and network.”
