UP Emeritus professor sets 'record straight' on Concentration Camps in the South African War

Professor Fransjohan Pretorius, an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Historical and Heritage Studies, published an article to The Conversation in February 2019 in response to comments made by British Conservative MP Jacob Rees-Mogg on the South African or Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).

In an interview with the BBC Rees-Mogg contended, amongst other claims, that the death rate in the concentration camps set up by the British to intern Boer women and children was exactly the same as the death rate in Glasgow at the time. Drawing from his 49 years of historical research, Professor Pretorius was able to challenge the MP's claims.
