External culture

Insync:

This is a song-and-dance competition for the first-years only. Insync has just had a name change and was previously called Ienkmelodienk. The name, insync, is derived from the word "synchronized" which refers to the synchronized dancing and singing within the competition. The number one, as an added feature, refers to the first years which take part in the competition. Together, the name "insync" reveals the ultimate objective for the night: For the first years to stay in sync with one another and as an added effect - become more insync with the University of Pretoria.

Insync takes place on the last night of Welcoming Week. The first few days of the first-years’ life at res consists mainly out of practicing for insync – pixies drink, eat, sleep and breathe the songs and moves, which are taught to them by their External Culture HK. This is the place where you make most friends you will keep for life. These days are very hard work for the first-years and even though you get very little sleep and get very tired, it’s all worth it in the end.

Serrie:

Serrie is normally the most fun event in the whole year, and anyone who does not participate is defiantly MISSING OUT! This competition is open to anyone in Zinnia who would like to participate. Serrie is performed to all the mens’ residences and they judge your performance, creativity, song choice and just how much fun we are having. If you want to impress the mens' residences, then Serrie is the way to go. Zinnia's culture is really looking up and we are flying towards the top. The following evening the mens's residence come and Serrie for the ladies. The top 5 Mens and the Top 5 Ladies reses are then sent through to Serrie Finals later in the week.

In 2015 Zinnia made it into the Serrie finals for the first time in Zinnia history. This was a massive achievement for us and for Groenkloof Campus.
Following this enormous triumph, Zinnia broke this record in 2016 – where we placed 2^nd!
Zinnia keep on going from strength to strength, 2017 is sure to be an amazing year!

Serenade:

Serenade is all about the voices!! And not so much about the moves and dances. The top singers in each res participate and compete with other residences for a place in Nationals. At Nationals five different universities across South Africa compete against each other. Creativity is an important aspect in Serenade.

Internal Culture

This is all the cultural activities that take place within Zinnia, however may include other reses. The Internal Culture HK member works together with the culture committee, to make sure that each year is a truly cultured one for every girl in Zinnia. Throughout the year, many events take place outside the res that count towards the res, we can enjoy these activities together and learn more about each other. One of the biggest internal culture activities is Culture week. Culture week allows our Pixies and Fairies to show off their talents and we all get the chance to learn about each other’s cultures and languages.
Internal culture is an important aspect in Zinnia as it allows for the residence to unite even more, and enjoy themselves at the same time.
