The name “Thuthuka” (a Zulu verb meaning “to develop”) was chosen by SAICA to designate its transformation initiatives related to increasing the number of African and Coloured chartered accountants. The Department of Accounting’s transformation programme was established in order to better serve the financial knowledge and skills needs of South African business, by taking cognisance of the recognised need to transform the demographics of the accountancy profession.

The Thuthuka Bursary Fund is administered by SAICA. It aims to assist academically-talented African and Coloured students to pursue a BCom Accounting degree in order to become chartered accountants. The Bursary Fund places students at various participating universities, including the University of Pretoria.
