UP Centre for Sustainable Malaria Control

The University of Pretoria Centre for Sustainable Malaria Control (UP CSMC) focuses on safer and sustainable malaria control and management through collaborative research in the university. The Centre is a multidisciplinary, interdepartmental and interfaculty platform that links and consolidates existing research expertise on malaria control. About 60 staff members and 40 students from six faculties are involved in the UP CSMC, including Health Sciences, Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Engineering, Built Environment and IT, Economic and Management Sciences, Veterinary Sciences and Education.

Ninety per cent of all malaria deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa.

The UP CSMC is the only Centre in South Africa that conducts continuous research on all aspects of the disease, including the parasite itself, the mosquito (vector) and health implications (such as its effect on people, the environment and health education).

The Centre aims to make a substantial and SUSTAINABLE contribution towards a malaria-free Africa by:

• employing sustainable and environmentally safe malaria vector control technologies

• establishing integrated vector management strategies

• ensuring effective malaria case management

• promoting health education in affected populations

The research activities of the UP CSMC are aligned with those of the National Department of Health and the goal to eliminate malaria by the year 2018. In 2012 the Centre was awarded the DST/NRF SARChI Research Chair on Sustainable Malaria Control, which focuses on blocking transmission. In parallel, and linked to this research, the Centre also established a comprehensive integrated vector management (IVM) research initiative. And in 2014 the UP CSMC was awarded an MRC collaborating centre status for malaria research.

These successes present a great platform for the Centre to expand its activities in breadth and depth while engaging more partners to work towards a malaria-free Southern Africa.
