Presentation of the Mokwinning Nhlapo Award by Ms Rosey Sekese, Director General of the Department of Communications to Ms Nozipho Mashiyi.
The late Mr Enoch Mokwining Nhlapo, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Communications of the Government South Africa, was the champion not only of this project, but on a wider scale also of the Presidential National Commission on Information Society and Development (PNC on ISAD). The purpose of the Commission is to establish South Africa as an advanced information-based society in which information and ICT tools are key drivers of economic and societal development. Mokwining Nhlapo enrolled for a Masters degree in Information Ethics at the University of Pretoria and embarked on extended research and lecturing in the USA. The tragic death of Mr Mokwining, and that of four of his children, has left an enormous void in the lives of his family, friends and colleagues. His enthusiasm, energy and dedication towards building an inclusive information society will be remembered with gratitude.
During the development of the Africa Network for Information Ethics, Mr. Mokwining Nhlapo played a significant and leadership role. At the time he was the Deputy Director General at the Department of Communication in South Africa and Head of the Presidential National Commission for Information and Development. He used these platforms to inform and motivate other government officials to acknowledge and promote the importance of Information Ethics in Africa. Mokwining Nhlapo was one of the driving forced behind the conceptualisation and organisation of the first ever Information Ethics Conference that took place in Pretoria during February 2007.

Professor Dennis Ngong Ocholla has been a constant pillar and academic tour de force for Information Ethics in Africa. Not only has he ensured the presence of Information Ethics at the annual Department of Information Studies (DIS) conference at the University of Zululand, but he has also published much on the topic, ensuring the visibility of an African Information Ethics.
A Special ANIE Award for a decade of special contribution to Information Ethics was presented by Prof. Hannes Britz (Provost, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA) to Prof. Rafael Capurro.

The Festschrift in honour of Rafael Capurro was launched during the gala dinner on the evening of 22 February 2017. The editors, Jared Bielby and Matt Kelly introduced the book, Information Cultures in the Digital Age. and provided a succint overview of the project.
