African Languages

Dumelang! Sanibonani! Lotjhani! Have you ever wondered what people do when they are planning a lekgotla or an imbizo? Is it one of your New Year's resolutions to learn an African language? If these sound familiar, then the department of African Languages is the place for you.

Welcome to the department that can make you multilingual and offer you a gateway to a successful future. Ke therešo, montshepetšabošego wa borare ke mo leboga bosele. ‘Truly, one who has been taught wisdom of life deserves a big thank you.’

At the University of Pretoria's Department of African Languages, we cater for the whole spectrum of language learners – from beginners to students who speak an African language as a home language.

Even if you have no knowledge of an African language, you are welcome to join the department on a journey of higher education through the landscape of the languages that surround you every day.

For any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact the department.
