ANAESTHESIOLOGY NOTES FOR PREGRADUATE STUDENTS, INTERNS, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE DOCTORS COMPILED BY DR FJ SMITH DEPARTMENT OF ANAESTHESILOGY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE FACULTY OF HEALTH SCIENCES UNIVERITY OF PRETORIA PRETORIA SOUTH AFRICA These notes were originally written by consultants in the Department of Anaesthesiology, University of Pretoria. To create some uniformity and agreement between the different lectures, all the notes were edited, expanded, or rewritten by Dr Smith. The aim of the lectures are not in the first instance to pass an exam, but to convey knowledge that enable the student to understand and apply the scientific basis of the perioperative management. The notes are by far not a complete course in anaesthesiology, but should be enough for the students to pass the exam, but also to equip them with adequate knowledge to survive internship, community service, and for the Diploma in Anaesthesiology. The font of the lecture notes is big or small. The parts in large print contains the curriculum for the MBChB V and VI, while the small print contains background knowledge (physiology, pharmacology, and physics). Students are invited to comment on the lectures; to point out errors, and to suggest changes in content and layout. |
