The Department handles more than 6 000 students per annum and is involved in more than 90 undergraduate and postgraduate modules.
Besides being involved in the training of health professionals, we have a postgraduate programme with specialisation in Clinical Anatomy, Cell Biology/Histology and Skeletal Biology/Physical Anthropology. Successful candidates can obtain a BSc (Hons), MSc and PhD in any of these three main research focus areas.
The aim of the BScMedSci course is to train students in the basic medical sciences, with the objective of research, laboratory work or academia. The three years provide a broad background, and it is strongly advised that students should continue their studies to include at least an honours degree, in order to establish themselves in a particular field. After the three years, honours-, masters- or doctoral degrees can be obtained in a number of fields, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and chemical pathology.
It is highly recommended that a student with a BSc (Hons) should further their studies by obtaining a MSc or PhD in any of the following areas of specialisation: Clinical Anatomy, Cell Biology/Histology and Skeletal Biology/Physical Anthropology. Scholarships/bursaries are available from various sources.
