Overview

The research areas have been narrowed down to four main research focus areas within the Department of Animal and Wildlife Sciences

Physiology of farm animals, companion animals and wildlife

Fundamental aspects of growth physiology and development, lactation and reproduction physiology, digestive physiology and digestive processes, and the adaptation of livestock, companion animals and wildlife. A variety of carcass characteristics of animals are studied in order to ensure or improve product quality. Digestive physiology and the micro fauna of livestock, companion animals and wildlife are also studied.

Nutrition

The nutrient requirements, mineral utilisation and metabolism of livestock, companion animals and wildlife are studied in order to improve the feeding standards and ration formulations of a variety of species in different production systems

Genetics and breeding of livestock, companion animals and wildlife

The Department of Animal and Wildlife Sciences at UP made a significant contribution to quantitative research in livestock breeding in South Africa. Several researchers at this Department contributed to the development of the Bonsmara breed, and this resulted in a number of studies on beef cattle

Ecology of livestock, companion animals and wildlife

The ecology and behaviour of mainly the larger predators, but also livestock and companion animals and other wildlife, are studied in order to provide a better basis for wildlife management and conservation programmes in national and private conservation areas locally and abroad. The influence of social behaviour on productivity, herd size and dynamics are quantified in order to improve the management of livestock and wildlife
