BIOMATH, a tradition of annual scientific meetings hosted in Sofia by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences since 1995, is an international conference devoted to recent research in life sciences based on applications of mathematics as well as mathematics applied to or motivated by biological studies. Following a meeting involving the International Steering Committee and participants in the BIOMATH 2012, it was decided to reinforce the tradition of having one annual BIOMATH conference in Sofa or some other city in Bulgaria. It was further decided to organize from time to time additional conferences which are called satellite in the sense that they take place outside Bulgaria in order to extend the BIOMATH experience to other regions in the world.
The first international conference to the conference Biomath 2015 (Bulgaria) will be hosted by the University of Pretoria, Pretoria, South Africa from 12 to 17 July 2015. It is a multidisciplinary meeting forum for researchers who develop and apply mathematical and computational tools to the study of phenomena in the broad fields of biology, ecology, medicine, biotechnology, bioengineering, environmental science, etc. The conference presents a range of invited keynote speakers, contributed research papers and poster sessions.
All areas of biomathematics are of interest. Papers devoted to mathematical methods, models and programming tools in biosciences, related to fields such as biomechanics, bioinformatics, theoretical biology, computational biology, biophysics. biochemistry, are welcome. Contributed talks in any of the above fields are invited for presentation at the conference. Participants need to submit a one-page abstract indicating clearly the significance of the reported results for the advancement of knowledge in bioscience and/or biotechnology.
For details on the aims and objectives of the satellite conference see the article.
The Satellite Conference is organised by the NRF/DST SARChI Chair in Mathematical Methods and Models in Bioengineering and Biosciences in the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. It is supported by biological sciences departments at the Univerty of Pretoria as well as other research centeres including DST/NRF SARChI Chair in Sustainable Malaria Control, The Mammal Research Institute, the South African Wildlife Station in Skukuza and the National Zoological Garden.
