Every now and again life presents us with a real treat – an unexpected wonderful opportunity that just comes our way without us doing much to make it happen. For the academic staff at the Centre for AAC, the opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr John Creswell a, professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and well-known research methodologist was one of those unexpected treats. Prof Creswell has authored various landmark books on mixed methods research, a research paradigm that has at last acknowledged that quantitative and qualitative orientations do not need to stand in competition with each other, but can supplement each other in very meaningful ways. This has changed the landscape of research forever, especially in people-orientated fields like education, social and behavioural sciences. Prof Creswell managed to give a talk that was meaningful and enjoyable to a diverse audience, ranging from students just beginning their academic endeavours to well-established researchers. We are very grateful to the Faculty of Education for creating this opportunity.
*Prof John Creswell was honoured by the Faculty of Education with an honorary doctorate degree at the 14th April graduation ceremony of the University of Pretoria for his seminal work in education research methodology and mixed methods research.
