Research Degrees at the Centre for Environmental Studies

In addition to the taught degrees at the Centre for Environmental Studies, we also offer research-based degrees. These degrees are based on research projects of a multidisciplinary nature and in the environmental fields. The topics of this research can cover problems in several disciplines, e.g. forest management, water quality management, rural development and environment, social issues with respect to the environment, biodiversity or invasive plant or animal species.

Research projects are normally within the context of a Masters (M.A., M.Sc., M.Inst.Agrar) or PhD research degree and students are expected to complete their research within a prescribed time period (normally 2-3 years). Research projects are supervised by academic staff associated with the Centre. Recent examples of topics for such research projects are:

• The interaction of indigenous knowledge and scientific knowledge in promoting sustainable harvesting of the indigenous silk moth Gonometa postica.
• Methods for planning a conservation network for the sustainable protection of wetlands in Gautreng, South Africa.
• Efficient methods for promoting biodiverity conservation through eco-agriculture in rural areas adjoining the Lubombo TFCA.
