Biography

Prof. Wanda Markotter is the Director of the Centre for Viral Zoonoses, Department of Medical Virology, School of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria. Since January 2016 she is also occupying a DST-NRF South African Research Chair in “Infectious Diseases of Animals (Zoonoses)”. She has an established research programme specifically focusing on disease ecology of zoonotic pathogens associated with bats and other small mammals.

Research description

Research focuses on the disease ecology, pathogenicity and diagnostics of rabies as well as other zoonotic pathogens associated with African bat species and other small mammals (rodents, sengi and shrews). The research includes regular fieldwork in South Africa and other African countries, seroepidemiological studies, isolation of bat-borne and other small mammal viral agents and determination of viral loads in naturally infected bats as well as pathogenicity studies on selected zoonotic viruses under experimental conditions in high bio-containment facilities.
