B.Eng.Hons(Electrical/Electronic/Computer Engineering)

The coursework portion of a Masters Degree is known as an Honours Degree at UP.  An Honours Degree should thus be seen as part of a Masters Degree rather than as a freestanding degree.

Students within the DEECE are required to successfully complete four courses of 32 credits each to obtain an Honours Degree. Students are expected to spend approximately 320 hours working on each of these courses which equates to approximately 4 hours a weekday per course for the duration of the semester.

Honours-Degree course lectures are presented in a block format where students are only required to attend lectures for a maximum of two weeks each semester. The balance of the study time is used for the completion of assignments with the lecturer available to assist students should they have difficulties.

The minimum duration of Honours-Degree studies is one year of full-time study.

Some of the Honours-Degree courses available in the DEECE are briefly summarised below.
ELB 780 Electronic Defence – Electronic Counter Measures This course provides an introduction to radar and electronic attack (EA) (jamming). Electronic protection (EP) techniques which reduce the effect of EA are also considered.
ELB 781 Electronic Defence – Electronic Support This course provides an introduction to electronic support (ES). EP techniques which reduce the effectiveness of ES are also considered.
EIN 732 Introduction to Research This course introduces students to the most important aspects of research. Students are guided through the process of evaluating published literature and developing a research proposal for their Masters-Degree studies. This course is compulsory for students wishing to complete a Masters Degree.
This course is currently presented by Prof. Malherbe. Prof. Malherbe has had a distinguished research career, and among his many accolades, he is a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the holder of an IEEE Third Millennium Medal. Prof. Malherbe is also Vice Principal Emeritus of UP, giving him a unique outlook on research from the perspective of both a researcher and a leader of research at an institutional level.
EPT 732 Research project: Theory This course allows the opportunity to conduct a theoretical study of a topic agreed between a student and their supervisor. Students usually use this course to support their research by performing theoretical analyses of the research topic which they defined in EIN 732.
EPT 733 Research project: Design and Laboratory This course allows the opportunity to conduct an experimental study of a topic agreed between a student and their supervisor. Students usually use this course to support their research by performing experimental analyses of the research topic which they defined in EIN 732.

The courses listed above are the main courses recommended to students seeking to study EW at UP. However, the broad nature of EW means that many of the other Honours-Degree courses available in the DEECE are also potentially of interest to students studying EW.
