The Railway Occurrence Investigation Programme at the University of Pretoria was developed to assist in eliminating the escalating and repetitive nature of railway incidents through proper investigation.

Prof Cheryl de la Rey, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Pretoria and Mr Nkululeko Poya, Chief Executive Officer of the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR), signed a memorandum of agreement for the sponsorship of the RSR Chair in Railway Safety on 14 November 2016.

Prof Hannes Gräbe is convinced that researchers at the University, in collaboration with railway stakeholders, have the technical expertise and facilities needed to be a leader in railway engineering in Africa.
