The Faculty is extensively involved in a wide range of professional services to the outside community, including membership of and contributions to statutory and professional boards, councils, professional associations, as well as the presentation of short courses and continuing education programmes. The Faculty has, among its staff, a number of experts and specialists who provide a consulting service to the public in general and serve on national and international bodies and committees.

2. Curricular Community Engagement
 

2.1 Non-clinical community engagement activities

i. Veterinary Professional Life (VPL 300), students in groups of 4-6 spend 10 hours on a project at one of 25 sites.

ii. The Rust de Winter community engagement project is fully integrated into the undergraduate module PHE 601 (Applied Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology) and involves all registered veterinary students.

3. Extra-curricular community engagement

The following are established projects that are currently running under VPL 300 with the potential to be developed into initiatives facilitating on-going extra-curricular activities by students and staff on a voluntary basis:

 Alma School: Gezina/ Onderstepoort  

• Therapeutic Riding for children with disabilities.

 CVC (SAVA): Winterveld, Wolmer, Bon Accord  

·         Promote vaccination and sterilisation of dogs and cats

·         Design educational materials on animal welfare, e.g. posters and pamphlets

·         Presentations on basic animal welfare

·         Raising awareness about careers in veterinary science.

 SPCA: Tshwane

·         Environmental enrichment and promote animal adoption

·         Awareness of animal poisoning 

 Vulture Rehabilitation Centre (VULPRO): Hartebeespoort

·         Training of vultures by positive reinforcement

·         Community awareness of the importance vulture of identification

 Weskoppies Hospital: Pretoria

·         Assess the cat population at the hospital - feral cats and domesticated cats.

·         Environmental enrichment for the Peacock and staff training

 Wetnose Animal Rescue Centre: Bronkhorstpruit

·         Assessing behaviour of the dogs that are up for adoption
