Our Clinical Unit comprises of 5 Adult, 1 Paediatric and 1 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as well as 3 High Care units. Our Units are staffed by a community of skilled, innovative, collaborative and caring medical, nursing, technological and allied health professionals. As a quaternary referral institution, the ICU’s take care of complex critically ill and injured patients. We have an active nursing leadership group and clinical nurse specialist who provide mentorship and coaching to new and experienced staff. Our supportive team environment is the essential key to our success in providing excellent care to our patients and their families. We are actively involved in teaching of pre- and postgraduate medical students and we also offer a Fellowship Programme in Critical Care for Medical Specialists. Training Critical Care Clinical Technologists is another important duty.
The ICU team cares for critically ill patients with complex medical disorders as well as post-operative general surgical, solid organ transplant, orthopaedic, obstetric and gynaecological and neurological patients. Nurses in this unit develop expertise in caring for patients with serious injuries, acute kidney injury, end-stage and acute liver failure, severe sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndromes, and those with renal transplantation. Special attention is paid to pain management, sedation, nutrition, physiotherapy and early mobilisation.
The critical care team includes nurses, physicians, physiotherapists, a social worker, a nutritionist, and a pharmacist all with expertise in meeting the needs of critically ill patients and their families. The nursing staff is active in improving the care of critically ill patients through innovative projects and clinical research.
