Message from the Head of Department

Early Childhood Education is concerned with the education of young children from birth to the age of nine years, i.e. those that attend early childhood centres and the foundation phase classes at primary schools. The early childhood phase (0 – 9 years) is often referred to as the most critical, most impressionable period of human development. Rich, stimulating learning experiences and quality relationships in the early years provide a strong foundation for success in later life.

The teaching profession, particularly foundation phase teacher training, has become a priority focus in South Africa in an attempt to assure the future sustainability of our country. Investment in quality early education is a strong, long-term investment with lifelong positive outcomes. The Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) believes that the contribution made by early childhood and foundation phase teachers to society cannot be rivaled by any other profession.

The Department of Early Childhood Education (ECE) is one of five departments in the Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria (UP). The strategic intent of the Faculty and Department is to align to UP’s intention to become a research-intensive university, as articulated in its strategic plan,Vision 2025. UP’s vision is to be a leading research-intensive university in Africa, known internationally for its quality, relevance and impact as well as developing people, creating knowledge and making a difference locally and globally.

The Department of ECE is highly esteemed within the profession and known, both locally and nationally, for its teaching excellence and service. In the last five years it has made significant gains in research, improving their publication profiles and demonstrating success in postgraduate research supervision. The Department’s research ambitions are evident, yet set within the context of its extensive undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

The Department of Early Childhood Education is fully committed to making a constructive difference in the lives of children, teachers, schools and communities. Our comprehensive and highly respected teacher education programme prepares students to take on this commitment and responsibility with confidence and to enjoy the excitement, creativity and challenges of working with young children.

Prof Cycil Hartell
