E-education is a centralised service provided to academic staff at the University of Pretoria to enable the skilful and appropriate integration of various information and communication technologies, including the World Wide Web (WWW) and mobile technologies. The group provides support for the use of web-supported learning, computer-assisted assessment, and creating interactive multimedia delivered via DVD-ROM and mobile devices.
The University has been using a Learning Management System (LMS) since 1998 to optimise and support student learning. The LMS, currently branded as clickUP, is based on Blackboard products. Currently the University is using the Blackboard Learn, Blackboard Mobile, Blackboard Collaborate, Turnitin and Respondus technologies to support this blended learning.
The E-education group supports technology enhanced teaching and learning through staff training sessions, consultation on the use of clickUP and other technologies, instructuonal design and an e-support office. CBT is used extensively for both formative and summative assessment at the University of Pretoria as an integral part of the assessment strategies of many academic departments. During the past 20 years, the use of CBT has increased steadily owing due to continuous growth in class sizes.
The University is using the QuestionMark Perception product, known as QuestUP within the institution, to support this need. In addition to QuestUP, two other systems are also used, namely the clickUP Test tool (Blackboard) and CompAssess (computer literacy testing).
The Department for Education Innovation provides assistance and training with regard to the use of this technology, creating applicable questions and interpreting the statistical analysis.
Within the UP context, multimedia refers to the use of many different media (sound, graphics and animation, for example) within one product to achieve a specific outcome. Such a programme is traditionally designed as a stand-alone programme distributed to students on DVD-ROM. In 2014 we will be building our first mobile product to distribute to students on their mobile devices. The content is usually a specific topic within a course or module and the multimedia product usually supplements and complements other modes of teaching.
The E-education team has developed more than 50 different multimedia titles since 1997. These are increasingly being marketed and sold to other universities and groups, both nationally and internationally. The team approach with a wide diversity of specialists has made it possible to develop award-winning multimedia products of a high standard.
