Prof Tania Hannekom received the award for her initiative of the Robot Race event which forms part of the Microcontrollers module EMK 310.
Prof Meyer received the award for his initiative (1) in making use of different approaches to explain complicated concepts, and (2) to produce videos of all his lectures. This blended learning gave students some element of student control over time, place, path, pace, and opportunity for repeating/revision. The videos are available on YouTube and are being used internationally by students, academic staff, and engineers in the industry. It has been watched more than 1.2 million times, and the channel has more than 14 000 subscribers.
Dr Riana Steyn received the award for the innovative teaching styles which move beyond the classroom. She has managed to connect her teaching styles with the mind, brain and education research informed strategies by asking the question, “what it takes to learn”. She embarked on a journey to find the best way of ensuring that what the lecturers teach the students actually “stick” and to understand what it takes to learn. She connects to the students in a blended learning environment by incorporating technology through most of her teaching strategies.
Dr Steyn has also set out to design the first interactive textbook used in this course due to the struggle to find a relevant textbook for her business analysis course. She believes that lecturers need to engage students far more effectively than they did previously.
