The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights’ Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa has launched the public consultation process of revising the 2002 Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression in Africa (the Declaration), during the African Commission’s 64th Ordinary Session in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The Declaration is being revised following the adoption of Resolutions 362, 350 and 222 by the African Commission mandating the Special Rapporteur to update and revise the Declaration. The draft Declaration has been developed and the Special Rapporteur is calling on stakeholders to provide feedback to the draft.

The objective of the public consultations is to elicit for comments with a view to strengthening the content and substance of the draft Declaration. This is also meant to ensure transparency and legitimacy of the process of revising the Declaration. Once finalised, it is anticipated that the revised Declaration will be adopted by the African Commission in October 2019.
