The main aim of this visit was to provide students with more insight in the veterinary science field through information sessions and practical demonstrations. It also served as an opportunity to explore other possible career paths that they might venture into in the future.

The group of 35 students taken on tour experienced animal-health related practices which they sometimes do not have, due to a lack of equipment and infrastructure at their college. The presentations and practical demonstrations were done by Prof Mark Williams and Mr Peter Mokonoto of the Pathology Section as well as Prof Jackie Picard and Prof Banie Penzhorn from the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases.

The information sessions and practical demonstrations varied from post mortem examination, vaccination and de-worming of dogs to tick borne diseases and state controlled diseases such as Anthrax and Brucellosis.

Basic laboratory diagnostic tests such as bloodsmear tests and skin scraping were also included in the practical demonstrations that took place during the faculty tour.

The students also got the chance to visit the Faculty’s veterinary academic hospital and experience its state-of-the-art technology and well-equipped facilities. They were overly impressed with the expertise involved in ensuring the health and wellbeing of the hospital’s animal patients.

It was indeed a very informative visit for the students, one which they will consider a highlight of their years of study.
