This system is different to conventional radiology in that the radiograph is digitized and is viewable on a computer monitor. The advantage of this system is that images can be manipulated to optimise pathological areas, measurements can be done on the viewing screen and images can be seen on one's office PC, downloaded and can be sent as JPEG images to referring colleagues, etc.
The images will be preserved on a PACS archiving system (Picture Archiving and Communication System) therefore doing away with conventional radiographs - the only radiographs that will be done in the conventional way from now on will be at Outpatients and for student training.
Additionally, ultrasound images (currently only equines - small animals will follow soon) will also be available on the PACS system.
The section will also in the nearby future be launching a Computed Tomography (CT) and new Scintigraphy system which will also be digitally available.
