Computer requirements

The newer and more robust your computer, the faster and more efficient you will be as an online student. This means the more access power you have in your computer, modem, and Internet service provider, the more efficient you’ll be. Access to a computer at work or at home is required.

The minimum computer specifications you should consider are:

• Windows 7, 8 or 10; Apple OSX 10, 10+ or Linux
• Broadband: ADSL, Fibre or 3G
• Browsers: Internet Explorer 11; newest Safari, Chrome or Firefox. (We recommend Chrome).

Computer skills

The web-based nature of the modules implies that you require a few basic computer skills in order to successfully participate in the degree programme. Competence in written English is also important.

The minimum computer skills required are:

• Word processing: 
  Create, edit and save a Word document on your computer
• E-mail: 
  Receive, open and send e-mail, and attach documents to an e-mail message
• Using the internet:
  Use a browser (e.g. Mozilla Firefox or Chrome) to access the internet, conduct searches, download and upload documents
• Installing software: 
  Install and uninstall software on your computer
• PowerPoint presentations:
  For some modules you will be required to create a basic PowerPoint presentation.

Credits

The programme totals 180 South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) or 60 European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) credits. (This amounts to 1,800 notional hours or student investment time).

The MSc has the following components:

• A two week compulsory induction/field-workshop to be hosted in South Africa
• Four compulsory core modules totalling 42 SAQA credits or 14 ECTS credits
• Theory- and skills-based elective modules totalling 48 SAQA credits or 16 ECTS credits
  (Note: for the skills-based elective modules, a maximum of two modules may be selected)
• Dissertation: 90 SAQA credits or 30 ECTS credits.

Delivery platform

This web-based degree programme will be presented on the clickUP Learning Management System (LMS). clickUP is the University of Pretoria's brand name for Blackboard Learn^TM.

English proficiency test

In order for international students to fit into both the academic and social environment, they need to be conversant in English. All international applicants whose first language is not English, will have to write and pass the TOEFL test.

Fees and funding

The fees for the MSc degree programme have not been finalised yet, but the estimated average tuition fees for 2016 (including re-registration) are R 20 000 - R 26 000 per year. The cost will be calculated per module, per year, and the dissertation is linked with the registration and re-registration fee. 

Note: If you are not part of a SADC country, the fees will be doubled.

Research project funding:

The cost of the research project will depend on the type of research undertaken. The project may be a retrospective study, or embrace work that the student has already done, but not published, or work that the student is currently busy with, or it can involve a survey of some kind, or a new project discussed with and approved by the supervisor.  Depending on the type of project it can be at almost no cost or, if a new project must be done, the cost could range from R 50 000 to R 70 000 (project only).

Registration and certification

Requirements for admission

Subject to the stipulations of the applicable General Regulations, a BScHons, a four-year BScAgric, BVSc or equivalent degree or a relevant postgraduate diploma (on NQF level 8) is required. Two years of professional experience might be required in certain cases.

Additional Requirements

According to the Bologna Bachelor-Master structure, a Masters degree is required to register at ITM. (Note: A four-year BSc degree in the South African context is equivalent to a Masters degree in the Bologna system). Two years of professional experience might be required in certain cases. It remains the prerogative of the head of department (UP) or course director (ITM) to require, in addition to the entrance requirements already mentioned, the successful completion of an admissions test before registration. A student may also be required to pass a proficiency test in English (TOEFL) at an acceptable level. The web-based/online nature of the modules requires basic computer skills in order to successfully participate in the degree programme.

Also consult the General Regulations. Students are required to confirm whether a module will be presented in any particular year. 

In cases where web-based/online modules are offered, basic computer skills is required in order to successfully participate in the degree programme.

In certain cases, it remains the prerogative of the head of department to require, in addition to the entrance requirements, the successful completion of an admissions test before registration. A student may be required to pass a proficiency test in English (TOEFL).
