Third Year:

Training commences in the third year of study in the Skills Lab, where the clinical setting is recreated. During this year, they learn to differentiate between normal and abnormal tooth structure, how to diagnose carious lesions, the removal of the lesion and then ultimately the restoration of the lesion.

Students gain practice by learning these procedures on extracted human teeth mounted on a phantom head. This is their first practical exposure to dentistry.

Fourth Year:

Students get their first clinical exposure. They dedicate their efforts to the comprehensive care of the patient by means of basic restorative dentistry. During this year, they improve their manual dexterity as well as their interpersonal skills. They are taught to always maintain a professional but caring relationship with their patient.

Fifth Year:

The fifth year sees them combining their growing clinical knowledge in all fields of restorative work. Root canal treatments, crown and bridgework and the treatment of pediatric patients are the highest priorities. All students get the opportunity to render their services to the community through projects in Hammanskraal and on the Phelophepa Health Train.

By the end of this year, they are able to treat patients confidently in all the disciplines of restorative dentistry.
