Prof Christa Janse van Rensburg (HOD)
Prof Christa became head of the Section Sports Medicine in 2000. Apart from the daily demands of her academic life, she runs both a Sports Medical and a Rheumatology Practice.
She is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. She is Chairperson of Exercise is Medicine in South Africa, and the President Elect of the SA Sports Medicine Association. She has won several awards, among which the FIMS (International Federation of Sports Medicine)-Copamede Intercontinental Travelling Fellowship. She regularly attends courses and congresses, and also presents lectures to sports medicine, orthopaedic, and physiotherapy students, as well as general practitioners and corporate groups.
She has been awarded her MD and is an NRF rated researcher. She has authored and co-authored in excess of 100 articles in peer reviewed journal and is the course coordinator of the MSc Sports Medicine course, thus far having trained more than 100 doctors.
She has accompanied sports teams as team doctor for more than ten years. A highlight was accompanying the South African team to the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, and also being the venue medical officer at Loftus Stadium during the FIFA Confederations Cup and World Cup.
But she is not all work and no play. She is a keen sports person who has previously played netball at a national level, and ran both the Comrades Marathon and the New York Marathon. She also enjoys cycling and is a regular participant in the Argus Cycle race. She is an avid bird watcher and during winter she often joins her husband on hunting weekends."

Dr Rina Grant
Dr Rina Grant is appointed as senior lecturer and head of research in the Section Sports Medicine, University of Pretoria. She has proved invaluable to the Section Sports Medicine since her appointment in 2003 as she is instrumental in the successful completion of an average of 6 to 10 MSc students at the Section Sports Medicine annually. She has published numerous academic papers and presented at various local and international congresses. MSc Sports Medicine students are successfully lead through their research obstacle path by her as supervisor.
Qualifications include a National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, BSc Hon, MSc (Physiol) and PhD (Physiol). Her PhD is titled “The effect of intensive physical training on cardiac autonomic variability. Factors that may influence the results” It investigated the influence of a medium-to-high-volume exercise program on cardiac autonomic nervous system (ANS) variability as quantified by time domain, frequency domain and Poincaré analyses of heart rate variability (HRV)

Dr Maki Ramagole
Known as Maki, Dr Ramagole qualified as a Medical Doctor in 1987 at Medunsa. She started working with South African Football Association as team doctor for Banyana Banyana in 1998, and qualified in MSc Sports Medicine in 2002 at the University of Pretoria. She has experience in GP private practice. She has worked extensively with physical rehabilitation in Tshwane Rehab, Muelmed and in Rustenburg. She has done training in AMA Disability rating.
She has travelled extensively with Soccer and Athletics. She was a member of the medical team at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, at the All Africa Games and Zone VI Games. She worked as team doctor for Tuks Soccer, and as stadium doctor.
She was a Venue Medical Officer in Mbombela Nelspruit during 2010 FIFA World Cup.
She was Chief Medical Officer for Western Cape at the Schools’ Games in 2015.
She was medical officer for Western Cape and Gauteng School games 2016 and 2017 respectively. She was appointed team doctor for Rural Games and OR Tambo Soncini Games which were launched in 2017.
She is currently employed as a lecturer in Sports Medicine at the University of Pretoria. This involves attending to patients and athletes in all sporting codes at the clinic, research and lecturing.
Mrs Audrey Jansen van Rensburg
Mrs. Audrey Jansen van Rensburg joined Section Sports Medicine in 2013. She is appointed as a Research Assistant providing study guidance and research support to MSc students. Her qualifications include a BSc, BSc Hons. and a MSc (Microbiology) from the University of Pretoria. She is currently enrolled for her PhD titled: “The incidence of, and risk markers associated with respiratory- and gastrointestinal tract illness in South African elite rugby players participating in the Super Rugby Tournaments: 2010 – 2017”.

Mrs Brenda Weder
Mrs Weder is responsible for the administration of the Section Sports Medicine, and has been with the Section since the beginning in 1999.
Mrs Madeleen Scheepers
Mrs Scheepers is indispensable to the Section Sports Medicine, and responsible for the smooth run of the daily happenings at the office. She will be your first contact with Section Sports Medicine, and joined us in 2013.
