The Student Governance Unit aims to create stability in student governance and to contribute towards stability on campus. The revised Constitution for Student Governance (CSG) that has been in implementation from 2013 has contributed towards transformation on campus, and specifically in student leadership. The Unit is also responsible for providing oversight to student societies. Societies provide fertile ground for personal and leadership growth.
The Unit is responsible to oversee the annual Student Representative Council (SRC) Elections. The 2018 Student Representative Council elections took place from 07h00 on the 27th until 19h00 on 29 August 2018. The 2018 Student Representative Council Elections were historic from several perspectives there was a significant increase in voter participation, in comparison to the previous year. We are proud to say that the Electoral Committee and other relevant stakeholders including the Independent Monitoring Body once again rose to the challenge to not only deliver yet another free and fair election but to build on the foundations of electoral democracy set over the past years in University of Pretoria.
The inauguration and the oath of office of the newly elected SRC was arranged by the DSA and took place on Friday, 23 November 2018. The newly elected SRC consists of 7 ex-officio portfolios and 12 elective portfolios. The ceremony was held in the university’s Senate Hall and was conducted by the outgoing Chief Justice of the Constitutional Tribunal: Antonie Klopper and was assisted by the incoming Chief Justice Constitutional Tribunal: Mpho Mogadime.
The Unit coordinates a training camp at the start off the SRC's term of office to povide a sense of direction, outline measurable goals, guide day to day decision and further evaluate the progress and change of approaches, and to support the team to write their annual POAs.
The purpose of this camp is to:
encourage group cohesion amongst the SRC leaders through teambuilding activities.
facilitate the development of an organisational vision, mission and goals for their term in office.
enable SRC members to understand the roles of the different portfolios within the SRC.
The Unit also facilitiates training by various UP Service Departments to enable SRC members to assist during the Welcoming period in January each year. The purpose of this training is:
to equip SRC members with the ability to handle student cases in an effective and efficient manner.
to get SRC members as leaders to better understand finance-, admission- and placement- policies of the University.
