The Department views the need for and use of research as fourfold, viz. to:
- Serve the wider academic/scientific planning community by providing new, and testing existing, knowledge and theories in planning and associated disciplines;
- Provide planning practitioners with appropriate and useful knowledge by conducting reflective research on the practice, products and outcomes of planning actions/activities;
- Ensure the sustained relevance and credibility of lecturing staff in the field, by honing their mental skills and keeping them alert to the latest developments in the field; and
- Build bridges between members of staff, as well as between the members of staff and researchers in other institutions around shared areas of concerns/interest.
