We offer the following modules in translation at undergraduate level:
Module TRL 151 at level 1 - valued at 6 credits:
Introduction to translation
Translation and basic translation skills such as source text analysis, translation methods and translation aids. Translation in South Africa. Practical translations of a variety of texts of limited scope.
Module TRL 251 at level 2 - valued at 10 credits:
Equivalence in translation
Equivalence at word level and above word level. Equivalence at text level. Problems of equivalence in a variety of texts. Practical translations.
Modules TRL 351 & TRL 352 at level 3 - valued at 15 credits each:
· Intercultural translation
Translation and language varieties such as dialects, code-switching, sociolects, etc. Translation of culture bound texts. Translation in a multilingual speech community such as South Africa. Practical translations of a variety of different text types.
· Literary translation
Theories of and strategies for literary translation; study of translated texts; practical translation (prose and poetry)

(In addition to these modules that can cover any language combination, there is a module at level 3 (FRN 363) that focuses specifically on translation from and into French).
All of these modules are practical in nature and are designed to set you on the road to becoming a practising translator. Modules in translation are excellent in combination with any other subject and will add value to any field of study.
