INTERNAL CULTURE

The purpose of “well-being” within our residence is to really make Katjiepiering a home away from home. It embodies all the support and comfort that one would receive at home to ensure that we are indeed the family we claim to be. Aspects of well-being are spiritual, emotional, academic (dealt with separately) and physical support, as well as creating a generous spirit of sisterhood within all the girls of the res, so that at any given time anyone of us would gladly reach out and help carry a sister through whatever mountain in life she is trying to climb.

As far as spiritual support goes, several of the many churches in the area host cell groups within the walls of our residence and we make an effort to ensure that all girls find a church or place of worship in which they feel comfortable. Worship evenings within res, and Spiritual Week involving all the res's are also exciting spiritual events in the calendar.

Emotional support is offered not only by the HK but also soon to be offered by specially trained peer councillors within the residence. This ensures that no matter what a girl may be going through, there will always be a trained ear to listen and help. Emotional support also involves referring girls to the Tuks support system of trained professionals on campus if need be.

Physical well-being is a new aspect to the well-being portfolio and it is separate from sport in that it is a non-competitive way of breaking loose from studying and getting some fresh air into those over worked brains. Activities such as hikes, jogs, or just a game of Frisbee amongst ourselves or with a mens’ residence will be on the cards here!  So all in all, Well-being is aimed at building ourselves a home, where we can happily be ourselves and build lifelong relationships with the sisters around us that will support us through the many curve-balls that university life and later life throw at us.
