Research Associate of the Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures elected as Fellow of the British Academy.

The Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures is proud to announce that Professor Pauline Allen, a research associate of the department, has been elected as a Fellow of the British Academy.

At its Annual General Meeting (14 July 2016), the Academy elected 42 UK academics as fellows and in addition, the Academy also elected 20 Corresponding Fellows from overseas universities. Professor Allen is a Research Professor of Early Christian Studies and Director of the Centre for Early Christian Studies at the Australian Catholic University in Brisbane. Professor Allen’s research field is early Christian literature, especially the study of letters and homilies and the edition of Greek texts.

The book “Christians Shaping Identity from the Roman Empire to Byzantium. Studies inspired by Pauline Allen.” was published as a supplement to Vigiliae Christianae by Brill last year to honour Professor Allen for her contribution to the study of Early Christian literature. Dr Koos Kritzinger (UP) contributed a chapter to this book entitled “The Use of Comparison and Contrast in Shaping the Identity of a Desert Monk.”
