Welcome to the Department of Mercantile Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria.

 

Mercantile Law is the field of law which regulates and promotes  the national and international business world. 

 

It is the body of law that applies to the rights, relations, and conduct of persons and businesses engaged in commerce, merchandising, trade and sales, insolvencies, business rescues, securities, labour law, taxes etc.

 

It also involves Banking, Contracts, Companies, Labour, Partnerships, Take-overs, Tax, Shipping, Competition Law and so on. As such it is integrally linked to professional legal practice and the business world, to mergers and acquisitions, business schemes and development, national and international trade, and dispute resolution. 

 
The research areas of members of the department reflects our expertise and current interests.
