Message from the HoD, Prof Monray Marsellus Botha

Mercantile law is a broad area of the law which covers a diverse range of topics such as Labour Law,  Company Law, Consumer and Credit Law, Information, Communication and Technology Law, Banking Law, Insolvency Law, Taxation Law, Insurance Law and Specific Contracts, to mention but a few.  Mercantile Law also includes various aspects that integrate fields such as Administrative Law, International Law, the Law of Contract, the Law of Delict and Criminal Law, as well as other fields of the law.

The Department of Mercantile Law is the largest department in the Faculty of Law, teaching not only law students but also students in other faculties such as Economic and Management Sciences, and Engineering, the Built Environment and Information Technology.

The Department boasts the fact that it is a young and dynamic department with up and coming researchers as well as more established international and NRF-rated researchers. The past and the present is important to us as a department in cementing our place in the future.

Teaching and learning as well as research are important building blocks which are evident from the high levels of teaching and learning practices that are utilised as well as research that is not only relevant but also dictates policy and direction and has a real impact. As Head of Department it is my vision to cement the presence of the Department as a frontrunner on teaching and research by developing students, academics and support staff in order to facilitate the advancement of better quality graduates. This should all be achieved whilst making social values, ethics, diversity, integrity, transparency and accountability core values in the context of national and international teaching and research standards.

The Department of Mercantile Law and I would like to extend a warm welcome to all our current graduates as well as prospective graduates and wish you a prosperous journey in your various endeavours in the Department.
