PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT STUDENTS WILL HAVE TO START EARLY TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS IN THIS REGARD - THE EARLIER YOU START, THE BETTER.

Chemical Engineering students must do two compulsory periods, each of  six (6) weeks' duration,  of industrial experiential training (Practical Training CPY 311 and CPY 411) at the end of their 2nd and 3rd years of study, respectively. The purpose of this is to gain practical exposure with regard to the application of engineering principles in  industry while at the same time experiencing the interaction between disciplines and also experiencing the importance of human relations and the need for application of safety regulations.

At the end of each of these periods students have to write and submit a report according to standard guidelines on their Practical Training. The purpose of this is twofold:

(i)  The student gets an opportunity to write a technical report and
(ii) The employer as well as the Department has a document which can be used to evaluate the nature and quality of the work of the student during the period.

Please note that, before the report is submitted at the Department on the submission date below, it has to be approved by the employer.

Also note that, although it is preferred to do the entire practical training period of 6 weeks with one employer and in one period, it will be acceptable to do the required time with more than one employer, spanning over more than one time period, i.e. 2 weeks in April/July and 4 weeks in Dec/Jan. The final report submitted on CLickUP should however be a single, combined report.

The Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) specifically requires this type of experience in the training of engineering students. Please take note that, should a student not comply with the requirements of CPY 311 and CPY 411, he/she is not eligible for graduation. It is the responsibility of the student to comply with these requirements. Please consult the Yearbook Eng 10(b)

Please note that ALL students who are eligible to register for CPY 311 or CPY 411 should download & complete the required documentation, as set out below, re-name the document to start with your surname and e-mail it to [email protected]  by mid-October of the current year.:

 Third year students :
If you have already passed CPY 311 and if you have had exam entrance for CMO 310 (or have already passed this module), you are eligible to do practical training in the current year, in order to be able to register in the next year for CPY 411 Practical Training 411 and submit your report.

Students preparing for CPY Practical Training must download the following documents:
