The transition to a liberal democracy in South Africa has brought about incisive consequences for the church. A radical new context has been created in which the church is exposed to national and global tendencies that strongly influence the views and conduct of members and the functioning of church denominations and ecumenical organisations. The separation of religion and state as well as border transcending globalisation has the result that traditional approaches to the fulfillment of the public responsibility of the church are questioned and the church is faced with completely new challenges in this regard.
The mission of the Centre for Public Theology is to assist the church in understanding the national and global context and the impact it has on the church itself, and getting more clarity on its public responsibility and the best ways to fulfill it.
