The year 2014 was important for the churches and the Centre as it marked 20 years of democracy in South Africa. There is a need for the church and public theologians to reflect on the meaning of democracy in South Africa and broadly in Africa. One has to recall that the demise of Apartheid coincided with major changes on the globe such as Perestroika, the fall of the Berlin wall and the meteoric rise of technology in a globalising world. Indeed, reflecting on the past 20 years of democracy is necessary particularly on the role of faith in the current world order and in the light of South Africa’s challenges in relation to religion. |
