Research

The Department of Dogmatics and Christian Ethics consists of five lecturers. Some of their most important research contributions of 2015 are as follow.

Prof Danie Veldsman, who is the Head of the Department, was the host of the annual conference of the South African Science and Religion Forum (SASRF).  Two international scholars were invited to be the plenary speakers at the Conference, namely prof Niels Gregersen of Denmark and prof Dirk Evers of Germany, together with the South African NRF A-rated scholar prof Wentzel van Huyssteen.  The theme of the conference wasCreation, Consciousness and Christology: Evolutionary Perspectives.

Prof Vuyani Vellem, who is the Director of the Centre for Public Theology, focuses in his research on Liberation Theology. He published – amongst others - an article with the title Black Theology of Liberation and the Economy of life in the international journal ECUMENICAL REVIEW, 67 (2) 177- 186, as well as an article in a South African accredited journal Verbum et Ecclesia (Skrif en Kerk), 36 (3) 1- 6 with the title Black Theology of liberation: A theology of life in the context of Empire.

The broad theme of the research of Dr Tanya van Wyk, who is also assistant-editor of HTS Theological Studies, is ‘reconciling diversity’, focussing on ecclesial ‘unity’ and ‘catholicity’ and issues of race, gender and sexuality. One of her important publications was the article with the title Political Theology as critical theology in the HTS Teologiese Studies-Theological Studies, 71 (3) 1- 8.
