Research

The Department of English is actively involved in research. We promote the further development of our graduates by supervising Honours mini-dissertations, Master's dissertations and doctoral theses.

Members of the Department have published books, chapters in books and articles, notably Professors Andries Wessels, David Medalie, and Corinne Sandwith, as have our Research Associate, Prof. Russell West-Pavlov and our Visiting Professor, Professor Anthony Chennells. Some members of staff are also well known as authors of novels, short stories, dramas and creative translation, especially Professors David Medalie, and Andries Wessels. Our Professors Emeritus are Professors Peter JH Titlestad and Rosemary Gray.

The wide range of our interests and fields of specialisation are reflected by the diversity of our publications.

We offer MA and PhD degrees by dissertation or thesis. We take pride in the many specialised areas of research in which our members of staff and postgraduate students are engaged. These include African and South African literature, Medieval literature and literature of the Renaissance and the eighteenth century, modernism and early twentieth-century literature, language studies (including language policy, editing, TESOL, creative writing, applied language studies and translation studies), children's literature, science fiction, Irish literature and colonial literature. We offer regular seminars in the Department, aimed at staff, senior students, and members of faculty and the public who are interested in the wide variety of topics offered.

We also offer special support to our postgraduate students in the form of a postgraduate society which meets regularly to discuss work and exchange ideas.
