Student Societies: Inklings

The Inklings (the UP Literary Society) is an independent student society.   The Inklings, named after the famous group at Oxford which included Tolkien and CS Lewis, offer an exciting addition to the scope for extracurricular activities of any student interested in literature or creative writing. The Inklings have creative writing workshops and their own bilingual poetry and short story magazine, Inclinations, which was relaunched in  November 2010 and has run several competitions to gather material.

The society presents an annual amateur dramatic production or play-readings, with plays by playwrights

such as Oscar Wilde, Shakespeare, Stoppard and Terry Pratchett. We have performed a number of setworks and rare medieval, classical and renaissance plays as a service to the academic community.

We also have community outreach - for the last three years, we had a bookdrive and donated books to schools in Mamelodi and other areas, as far afield as Middelburg (Mpumalanga).

The society was founded in 1982, and has been officially registered since 1985. It has traditional links with the Department of English, because the students who started the society worked closely with members of the department.

In 2017 and 2018, they did a setwork-related playreading of Oscar Wilde's Importance of Being Earnest, and in 2012 and in May 2019, of Shaw's Arms and the Man, and in 2013, of Goldsmith's She Stoops to Conquer.

The Inklings had play-writing competitions in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The winning play in 2013, No Joke, by Celma Costa (see photo below), was produced for the Krêkvars drama festival in July, directed by Marguerite de Waal and Keigan Downward.
