The National Mathematics and Statistical Sciences Teaching Development
In order to be research-intensive requires a rich international culture through which active partnerships with key international institutions in all recognised fields of research are established and further developed. Research questions related to the various challenges on the African continent will be of high priority. We are to a large extent already seen by many top international institutions as the preferred institution to collaborate with through partnerships with other African institutions. The extent and diversity that this Faculty has to offer, as well as the already well recognised fields of excellence provides for immense potential to advance our international profile by collaborating with top international institutions.
The Faculty has a longstanding culture of developing strong international partnerships across the globe and currently more than 450 active partnerships are listed on the database of the UP Research Information System. The majority of collaborative activities are with partners from the USA, Europe and countries on the African continent.
The current international profile of the Faculty is boosted by significant international grants our researchers receive from various funding agencies, such as the Gates foundation, IDRC, Rockefeller, EU funding, IFPRI, WK Kellogg Foundation, AERC (African Economic Research Consortium), SABINA (Southern African Biochemistry and Informatics for Natural Products), the World Bank and various other funding agencies. These involvements and activities support the strategic objective of UP to be a major role-player on the international front and, in addition, to have an impact locally and on the African continent.
The Faculty strives to intensify networking with government departments including the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the Department of Rural Development, the Departments of Trade and Industry, Health, Energy, Water Affairs, and others. The University is perfectly positioned in a city which has the benefit of having most of these partners on our doorstep, including many of the embassies of major countries on the continent and abroad.
