The Faculty contributes substantially to the building of research and teaching capacity in South Africa by producing highly skilled graduates, as well as generating new scientific knowledge through our research publications.
A significant number of our scientists are evaluated internationally and acknowledged by the National Research Foundation as researchers of high international standing – and in some cases, as world leaders in their fields. The Faculty is proud to host 50% of the A-rated researchers, and 40% of the NRF-rated researchers at the University of Pretoria.
In this Faculty, we constantly push the frontiers of knowledge and develop new technology that will help the Faculty to stay in step with the challenges of a continuously changing world.
As Deputy Dean: Research and Postgraduate Studies, I will furthermore endeavour to enhance the postgraduate student experience and the research outputs of the Faculty and support the careers, particularly those of the young academics in science.
I also wish to invite graduate students to become part of the exciting world of research by enrolling for postgraduate studies in the Faculty. Wonderful opportunities exist in world class, internationally acclaimed institutes and centres, such as the Forestry and Agricultural Biotechnology Institute, the Mammal Research Institute, Genomics Research Institute, the Institute for Food, Nutrition and Well-being and the Conservation Ecology Research Unit.
Prof Webb obtained the degrees BScAgric (1988), BScAgric (Hons) cum laude (1989), MScAgric cum laude (1992) and PhD (1994) from the University of Pretoria.
Outstanding academic achievements include the Standard Bank of South Africa merit award, UP postgraduate and merit bursaries, NRF merit awards, the AM Bosman Gold Medal, the South African Society for Animal Science merit award and the South African Society of Animal Science Bronze Medal for his PhD thesis.
In 1997 he was awarded a Research Fellowship from the Flemish Ministry and completed a postdoctoral study at the University of Ghent in Belgium and Nutreco in the Netherlands on aspects of growth modelling and the effects of nutrition on fatty acid synthesis in livestock. Prof Webb continued his research on meat science and animal production physiology at the University of Pretoria in 1999.
Prof Webb’s teaching and research focus on the effects of dietary factors, growth and growth modifiers on meat quality and animal reproduction. He has published and presented more than 70 peer-reviewed scientific papers, presented 85 papers at conferences or symposia, published 25 technical reports, co-edited two books, seven chapters in books, and 23 popular scientific papers. He is president of the South African Society for Animal Science and is a registered professional Animal Scientist. Prof Webb has a C1-rating from the NRF.
